It's a SENSORY experience (see, smell, taste, feel, hear) Poetry speaks to our HEART. It is ART with words for colors. POETRY is what YOU make it to be. |
POETRY TERMS
Concrete Language: specific, literal word usage to create imagery.
STEP 1: Choose something that you find poetic. Brainstorm a list of words that describes that object/idea/situation
BRAKE LIGHTS - red - glowing - dim - bright - outside - late - stop - parking - coming home - concentrating - marking papers |
STEP 2: Look at the words and see if you can find words that can better describe what you're trying to explain.
red - crimson, bright bright - illuminating, blinding concentrating - thinking coming home - returning late - after hours |
STEP 3: Write your poem OR if you have trouble, write it into a descriptive paragraph (indicated by the parenthesis).
Unfinished Business (It's) After hours, (and) late, in the opaque night. (The) Illuminating lights blinds and saturates my concentration, while (I am) slaving over (the) infinite mounds of papers (that are) stained with crimson markings. (People are either) Returning home from a night out or from work, (and I go back,) Returning to my labor. |
POETIC DEVICES
Poetic devices are used to help create imagery in your poems. Remember to always use the devices with a purpose.
SOUND DEVICES
alliteration: repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words (jiggle and jump for joy - juh)
consonance: repetition of consonant sounds within or at the end of words
assonance: repetition of vowel sounds
rhyme: repetition of final sounds
internal rhyme: repetition of final sounds within the same line of poetry
onomatopoeia: words that sounds like what they mean
