DEBATE: a battle between ideas. Where people disagree and each puts forth an idea in attempt to show that their idea is more superior than the other.
3 APPEALS of PERSUASIONETHOS - (Ethical Appeal) Focuses on your credibility as a speaker.
PATHOS - (Emotional Appeal) Persuading your audience through emotion (use of personal stories, language, etc) LOGOS - (Logical Appeal) Persuading your audience through reasoning (persuasive reasons to back up your claim: use of facts and statistics) |
DEBATE TERMS
- Proposition: statement; point being made
- Resolution: a proposition that begins with the word "resolved"
- Affirmative: true/yes (prove it's true)
- Negative: false/no (prove it's false)
- Status Quo: existing conditions
- Burden of Proof: the responsibility to prove something
- Argument: the reason for favoring their side of the proposition
- Evidence: information that helps prove something (facts, repots, quotes)
- Brief: an outline of both the affirmative and negative cases.
- Constructive: describes specific speeches that the debater make sduring the debate.
- Refute/Refutation: to prove someone wrong (offer evidence to show the other team's statement s false.)
- Rebuttal: contradicts an earlier statement
